Move toward more energy efficiency using a power meter
In this video I cover two main points that are helpful toward energy efficiency using a power meter:
1. A power meter helps determine which appliances draw power all the time regardless of use. For example, most tvs draw power 24/7/365. Unplug these appliances when not in use or turn them off at a power strip or surge protector.
2. A power meter allows you to see what each appliance draws which is extremely helpful if you are trying to conserve energy, develop back up systems or you are going off grid.
How to use a power meter
In addition I demonstrate the use of the power meter on small appliances such as a coffee grinder, hot water heater, and a toaster oven. Using this simple observation helps give a sense of what appliances are power hogs and which ones “sip” power for lack of a better word. Look for our follow-up video on how we use the power meter to really capture efficiency as it applies to using our battery bank. This is crucial in understanding what types of appliances are ideally suited for a battery bank and what appliances to stay away from.
